Since opening its doors in 1926, Hotel Viking has stood just above Newport’s harbor as a gathering place for travelers, artists, locals, and cultural figures drawn to the city’s creative energy. Built during Newport’s Gilded Age resurgence, the hotel quickly became part of the social fabric of Bellevue Avenue — welcoming generations of guests through moments of celebration, reinvention, and cultural change. Today, Hotel Viking enters a new chapter: thoughtfully restored for a new century while honoring the spirit that made it an icon in the first place.

1926
Hotel Viking officially opens at One Bellevue Avenue, created as a grand gathering place at the gateway to Newport’s historic district. With its distinctive architecture, elegant ballrooms, and elevated perch above the harbor, the hotel quickly becomes a centerpiece of Newport society.

1965
During the Newport Folk Festival, Bob Dylan stayed at Hotel Viking during the now-legendary weekend when he famously performed with an electric band for the first time — a cultural moment that reshaped modern music history. His time at the hotel was later depicted in the biopic A Complete Unknown, further cementing Hotel Viking’s place within Newport’s creative legacy.
Today
As Hotel Viking celebrates its 100th anniversary, the property enters a new era through a full restoration and reimagining of the guest experience. Thoughtfully renewed guest rooms, gathering spaces, dining concepts, and wellness amenities honor the hotel’s historic character while reestablishing The Viking as one of Newport’s defining cultural destinations for the century ahead.
